The York County Superior Court office of the district attorney houses the office of the District Attorney, the Domestic Violence Unit, and the 5 prosecutors assigned to handle the 800 plus felony matters and jury trials. In addition two victim advocates working with victims, there is a full time restitution clerk monitoring the payment of restitution to victims of crime. Additionally, All police departments have matters heard in the Superior Court.
The District Attorney’s Office has two special units: a juvenile unit and a domestic violence unit.
The Domestic Violence Unit is located in Alfred. Two prosecutors staff the unit. The domestic violence unit was created to give special attention to these difficult cases. The attorneys in the unit handle the cases from case intake through trial. They are also actively involved in outreach with area social services agencies devoted to helping victims of crime: SARSSM and Caring Unlimited.
The District Attorney’s Office also has an investigator that works out of the York County Superior Court location. She assists in follow-up investigations, victim interviews and jury work.
The Juvenile Unit: The two prosecutors that make up the juvenile unit travel between the three district courts. They focus on rehabilitating the juvenile offender so that he or she does not graduate to commit adult crimes. York County has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the State of Maine. York County was also the first county that started a drug court for juvenile offenders.
